Prof Clive Archer sees adult and paediatric patients. Clive specialises in the following common skin disorders and dermatological procedures:

Acne (including Roaccutane treatment), Alopecia (hair loss), Atopic dermatitis / eczema and allergic contact dermatitis, Cyst excision, Dermoscopy, Excision of Skin lesions, Fungal infections of the nails, hair and skin, Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, Moles and mole removal, Precancers (actinic / solar keratoses), Psoriasis, Rosacea, Seborrhoeic (age) warts and skin tags, Skin cancers - rapid diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, including epidermal skin cancers and melanoma, Skin pigmentation problems (including melasma and vitiligo), Urticaria (hives), Verrucae and warts.

NHS Activities:

Prof Clive Archer is a Consultant Dermatologist, and Honorary Professor of Dermatology (UCLan). Until 2023, he was a senior Consultant Dermatologist at the St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London (KCL). Clive is a highly-trained and experienced Consultant Dermatologist. Prior to returning to the St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, he was Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Lead for Dermatology at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol.

He has been Academic Vice President of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and President of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Dermatology.  As an MRCP Examiner in General (Internal) Medicine, he also chaired the Royal College of Physicians Joint Specialty Committee for Dermatology.

Clive has a particular interest in the teaching and learning of medical students, General Practitioners and other non-specialist doctors who are interested in skin conditions.  He has a special expertise in medical education and medical law.

Research:

His research interests include the immuno-pharmacological aspects of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis (M.D.), the interaction between inflammatory mediators and cytokines in the skin (Ph.D.) and the epidemiology of melanoma and non-melanoma (epidermal) skin cancer. He was made Honorary Professor (UCLan) in 2020 in recognition of his contributions to research in Dermatology & Immuno-pharmacology and to medical education. Most of the exciting new treatments in Dermatology are based on immuno-pharmacological research.

Prizes and Awards:

As a research fellow in Dermatology, in the UK and USA, Clive received recognition for his original research by being awarded the Silver, Gold and Silver Awards at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meetings (Residents’ Section, Original Investigation) on three consecutive occasions. He also won an American Dermatology Foundation Research Fellowship.
